************************************************************************************ Local NewsSNC-Lavalin has signed a contract worth $587 million to the Waneta Dam expansion south of Trail. The project will add a second, 335 megawatt powerhouse to the dam and is expected to be up and running by Spring 2015. The new powerhouse will make use of water spilled from the existing dam (map). The Waneta Dam expansion is part of a $900 million project jointly undertaken by the Columbia Basin Trust, Columbia Power, and Fortis Inc. SNC-Lavalin will take the project from start to finish, doing the engineering, construction as well as install two turbine-generator units. Read the full story at the CBC. SNC-Lavalin’s signing the contract itself is not a great surprise. According to Columbia Power’s webpage on the project, SNC-Lavalin was named the initial preferred proponent in May 2009. Columbia Power says the expansion will be good for workers in the region. According to Columbia Power, the expansion will provide 400 jobs and they expect 85 per cent of those jobs to come from within 100 km of the dam |
